The sun shone, the wind had disappeared and 4 of us headed down the A3 to play a friendly round at Blackmoor Golf Club. This is one my favourite nearly-local courses: designed by Harry Colt like so many of the very best around here (St George's Hill, Sunningdale, Swinley Forest, De Pan etc.), not long but with plenty of heather anxious to gobble up any errant tee shot.
We were made to feel most welcome by everyone we met: my playing partners took advantage of the special rate available to Surrey County Card holders (memo to Burhill members: get your, free, card from Carol or Joan at Reception!), whilst I managed for the first time to get courtesy of the course as Captain of Burhill (don't ask, don't get!).
We had to wait for the Hampshire Girls team to clear the tee, and were then pleasantly surprised that our yellow tees were actually ahead of their, red, ones. This does not explain why none of us managed to par the hole (whilst they did!), but fortunately this was one of the very few that at least one of us didn't play well. The quality of the golf was excellent, the chat entertaining, and the sausage sandwich delicious... and I am pleased to report that my partner Jon and I managed to come away a few pennies to the good.
Jon and I left after a swift drink to head home, but both Terry and Michael were so enthused that they decided to stay on for another 9 holes: that's dedication for you!
