I had a visitor to entertain at Burhill today We were due to meet at around 10 am but everything was flexible. At 8 o'clock everything looked fine outside but a quick visit to the Met Office website warned of things to come: there was a heavy rain shower on the way, after which the sun was due to come out for the rest of the day.
Easy decision then: meet at the Club at the appointed hour and start things off with a leisurely cup of coffee. And on this occasion, the weather forecast was perfectly accurate. We found ourselves on the first tee of the Old a few minutes after half past 10 and had no need of wets nor umbrellas for what was a very pleasant round. My partner and I lost a closely fought match - when your opposition, family or not, sink not one but two 40+ foot putts for birdies, life is not easy!
A pleasant hour in the sun on the terrace followed, and then another 9 holes on the New with my son beckoned. We appeared to be the only ones on the course on a lovely afternoon: where was everyone?
They can't have been watching the Masters, as the live coverage didn't start before 8 pm (why??). We had time for dinner first (steak and dauphinoise potatoes, accompanied by spinach and the best sauteed mushroom recipe I know!) after which a solid 4 hrs of golf watching.
At this rate though, Spieth will have everything wrapped up early tomorrow evening and our Masters dinner party will be distinctly bereft of excitement...
